Privacy Policy
This privacy policy explains what information SmoothMotion.video collects when you use the service, why, how long it is kept and what control you have over it. The service is run by the operator of SmoothMotion.video ("we", "us"). We have designed it to need as little information as possible: there are no accounts, and your videos are deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing finishes.
Summary
- No account, name, email address or password is required.
- An anonymous, HTTP-only cookie links your browser to your jobs.
- We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used.
- Only you can access your uploaded and processed videos.
- All uploaded and processed media is deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing finishes, or 3 hours after upload if it could not be processed in that time.
- Job metadata (no media) is kept for up to 24 hours, then deleted or aggregated into anonymous statistics.
- We do not sell your data.
Information we collect
Videos you upload
When you upload a video, we store the file temporarily so it can be validated and processed. We also store the processed output and preview thumbnails generated from it. We use your media only to provide the service to you: validating the file, interpolating it to your chosen frame rate, and letting you preview and download the result. We do not view, analyse or reuse your videos for any other purpose.
Job metadata
For each job we record operational details: the original file name, file sizes, the settings you chose (such as output frame rate), technical properties of the video measured when it is checked (such as duration, resolution and frame rate), and timings such as when the job was queued, started and finished. This metadata contains no media.
Cookies we set
We set two small, anonymous cookies that are strictly necessary for the service to work. Both are HTTP-only, which means scripts on the page cannot read them, and they contain random values rather than any personal information:
- Session cookie – links your browser to the jobs you create, so that you – and only you – can see their progress and access your results. If you clear your cookies, you will lose access to any jobs still in progress or awaiting download.
- Security cookie – protects uploads and other actions against cross-site request forgery.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics, a web analytics service provided by Google, to understand how visitors use the site – for example which pages are visited, how people arrive and which devices they use – so we can improve it. Google Analytics sets its own cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an identifier), which can last for up to two years, and collects information such as the pages you view, your approximate location, your browser and device, and an online identifier. This information is processed by Google, which may transfer it outside the UK and EU. Your uploaded videos are never shared with Google Analytics.
You can learn more in Google's explanation of how it uses information from sites that use its services, and you can opt out of Google Analytics on all websites with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Server logs
Like most websites, our servers may record technical information about requests, such as IP address, the time of the request, the page or resource requested and browser details. These logs are used only for security, preventing abuse and troubleshooting, and are kept for a limited period.
How long we keep information
| Information | Retention |
|---|---|
| Uploaded video | Deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing finishes (at most 3 hours after upload if it cannot be processed) |
| Processed video and thumbnails | Deleted automatically 30 minutes after processing finishes |
| Job metadata (no media) | Up to 24 hours, then deleted or aggregated into anonymous statistics |
| IP address and browser details recorded with each upload, for preventing abuse | Up to 24 hours, deleted with the job metadata |
| Session and security cookies | Up to 7 days, used only to link you to your jobs and protect your actions |
| Google Analytics cookies and data | Cookies last up to 2 years; Google retains analytics data according to the retention period set in our Google Analytics account |
| Server logs | A limited period, for security and troubleshooting |
The 30-minute window is fixed. Viewing or downloading your result does not extend it. If you cancel a job, its media is deleted immediately. Once deleted, media cannot be recovered by you or by us.
Anonymous statistics are aggregate figures, such as the number of jobs processed or average processing times, and cannot be used to identify you or any individual video.
How we use information
We use the information above only to:
- provide the service – accept, validate, queue, process and deliver your videos;
- keep the service secure and prevent misuse;
- diagnose problems and understand how the service performs, using anonymous aggregate statistics.
- understand how visitors use the website, using Google Analytics, so we can improve it.
We do not sell your data.
Who can access your videos
Your videos can only be accessed through the browser holding the anonymous cookie that created the job. We do not publish, share or make your videos available to other users. Access by our own systems is limited to what is needed to process and deliver your job and to operate and secure the service.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, data protection law (such as the UK GDPR or EU GDPR) may give you rights to access, correct or delete personal data, to object to or restrict processing, and to complain to a data protection authority. Because the service has no accounts and deletes media automatically, we generally hold very little that could identify you, and we may not be able to link any remaining records to you. You can delete your media at any time by cancelling the job, and it will be deleted automatically within 30 minutes regardless.
If you have a request or question about your data, contact us using the details below.
Children
The service is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "updated" date on this page shows when it last changed. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
